I'm not really into same sex people, but I think for girls, visual first impressions are really important. In fact, all visual first impressions are crucial. For example you work in a really big office with lots of competition, if you were to dress like a beggar on the street, the client won't care how good you are, they'll go for the smartly dressed one.
Back to the topic. I'd take in a guy's exterior before examining his interior, if you know what I mean. He doesn't need to be Cam Gigandet or Brad Pitt (my boyfriend is quite far from that), but he should be good-looking enough to be eye candy.
So once I've secured a target, I'd aim for the "acquaintance", then the "friend" status, but somehow it's too bloody obvious that I'm too bloody desperate that they shy away. But if I could, I'd become his friend before thinking of entering a relationship.
Looks aren't everything, but it can't be ignored. The most attractive thing to me of a guy would be his frame and build - muscle, height, strength, etc. Once an attraction is established and I'm pretty sure he feels the same way with me, I'll find out his personality. I won't go for egoists or clingy people (I've experience there).
